WHIRLABOUT

To De Intuïtiefabriek playing is to live in your own fantasy; creating your own world and totally disappear in it.
By transforming everyday objects and placing them in a different context you can let them surprise and amaze you. Something very small can become something gigantic in your imagination. In their project ‘Whirlabout’ they were inspired by the memory of turning angels above candles which they stared at endlessly when they were children. In their design they used the law of heat to relive that feeling of amazement they used to have as a child. De Intuïtiefabriek played with a physical phenomenon which resulted in a magical light balloon and a moving landscape on the table.

"Whirlabout' was designed for the exhibition `'Objects to Play`'

Materials: black MDF, steel and brass

COMPOSITION

‘Composition’ is a collaboration piece of De Intuìtiefabriek and Bob Waardenburg.’In history china cabinets added an air of formality to a living room or a dining area. They were a way to store and display people’s fine china, goblets and tea sets. De Intuìtiefabriek was fascinated by this idea and decided to create a contemporary china cabinet completed with a twelve piece tableware set. The simple and geometric shape of the cabinet enhances the compositions that are hand drawn on the tableware by Bob Waardenburg. The cabinet displays an exploded view of the tableware set and shows this collection in a mystical way.

Materials: Ash wood, smoke glass, porcelain
including a 12 piece tableware set (espresso
cup, tea mug, bowl, deep plate, plate)
Edition: Unique piece
‘Composition’ is exclusively available through Priveekollektie Contemporary Art | Design

SAFFIER

'Saffier' is a table inspired by gemstones and the art of goldsmithing. As a gemstone in its setting the black blue frame of this table holds its table top. Cutting and faceting of gems is translated into similar techniques that are used in the glass industry. The blue glass table top is cutted with a double facet into an octagon that refers to the trusted shape of many jewels.

Materials: Powder coated steel and sapphire blue glass
Edition: Unique piece

SUM

Making porcelain tableware by hand is a very time-consuming process where skill is involved which can result in valuable products. For ones not familiar with the technique of slipcasting this is sometimes hard to understand. De Intuïtiefabriek found a way to give insight in this production process and its effect on final prices in their project ‘SUM’.

‘SUM’ is a colorful collection of porcelain cups, bowls and plates in which every choice for detail, color and finish during the production process has a direct influence on the final result and price. By varying with the quantity of raw materials, the amount of labor put into a product and different finishing techniques De Intuïtiefabriek creates a diverse range of prices within this collection giving consumers the possibility to assemble their own tableware combinations.

‘SUM’ is available in the following stores: Vivian Hann, Amsterdam / LhGWR, The Hague / Edwin Pelser, The Hague / Dutch Design Year, Eindhoven / Walnut Mixstore, Groningen / Christian Ouwens, Rotterdam / CBK, Amsterdam

VIRTU – ORNATU

‘Ornatu’ is a refined dressing table, designed in our series Virtu.

Underneath a layer of smoke glass, treasures like jewelry and perfums are revealed in walnut drawers. Above this subtle ground a walnut ‘bridge’ holds porcelain containers and creates a stage for a warm colored mirror. This flirtatious combination of materials provides the perfect place to spend ones intimate moments of the day.

Materials: Walnut wood, coated steel, colored mirror, magnifying mirror, copper, porcelain and glass.
Limited edition of 3 + 1 prototype + 1 A.P.
‘Ornatu’ is exclusively available through Priveekollektie Contemporary Art | Design

VIRTU - CURIO

‘Curio’, a curiosity box for small objects and collections, is the second design in the series ‘Virtu’. Just like its predecessor (the writing desk ‘Scrinium’) ‘Curio’ combines storage space with displaying ones cherished belongings. Smoke glass tunnels form the shells for three small wooden drawers, giving a misty view on the stored items inside.

Materials: walnut, copper and glass
Limited edition of 7 + 1 prototype + 1 A.P.
‘Curio’ is exclusively available through Priveekollektie Comtemporary Art | Design

SOPA

‘Sopa’ is a collection of mirror cabinets for the bathroom. For this collection we played with the soapy look of plastic in combination with different shades of shiny mirrors. The shelves of this cabinet are like an abstract composition of lines attached to the mirror. Through the geometrical shapes and the use of color, the mirror and the shelves almost become one. The composition can be changed while it retains its functionality, so the mirror can be used either landscape or portrait on all four sides. Along with these cabinets we designed a small collection of bathroom containers in porcelain, walnut, glass and metal wire.

Materials cabinet: Colored mirrors and epoxy resin
Dimensions: 65 cm x 45 cm x 10 cm

Commissioned by Wallpaper ‘Handmade’ presentation at Salone del Mobile Milan 2012. The full story of how the Wallpaper Handmade project came together, from initial discussions to production, will be told in the August issue of Wallpaper*, out 12 July 2012

BREAKFAST BUFFET

The ‘Breakfast Buffet’ is a piece especially designed for Chateau de la Resle in France.
The solid oak table top forms the core of the buffet table. Different bowls lay in depressions in the table top, offering ground to the food presented during the breakfast. Glass bell jars in several shapes and heights cover all of the bowls. An image robust but refined. This buffet forms a landscape in which food is presented at various levels, creating a strong silhouette and making the table an object in itself.
Materials: oak wood, coated steel, porcelain and glass.

VIRTU – SCRINIUM

Writing desk ‘Scinium’ is the first furniture piece from our new series ‘Virtu’. This series arose from the previous project ‘Excavations’, which shows a unique collection of treasures, inspired by archeological excavations. Leaving the narrative element of ‘Excavations’ behind, we now focus on a series of furniture, in which users can display their own collection. ‘Virtu’ gives the user the ability to combine functions such as storage and showing ones precious things, as also seen in this first piece; working space and storing your desk utensils at one side of the desk, and showing your precious things on the other side. With its leather top, ‘Scrinium’ refers to antique writing desks.

Materials: walnut, powder coated steel, copper plated steel, leather
Limited edition of 3 + 1 prototype + 1 A.P.
‘Scrinium’ is exclusively available through Priveekollektie Contemporary Art | Design

EXCAVATIONS

With our project “Excavations” we show a unique collection of treasures, dug up from the corners of our imagination. As seen in archeological excavations these objects reveal a glimpse of a culture, its people and their customs. Varying from hand tools to vessels, from brushes to spoons; each unique and handmade. Put together in a fine crafted cabinet they are the artifacts from De Intuïtiefabriek.

METROPOLIS

In our first project we combined our excisting individual work to create a new world. In ‘Metropolis’ vases become buildings, flowers become bridges, bowls become valleys and spoons become ladders…
